Sclerotherapy – A Traditional Vein Removal Alternative
Sclerotherapy, used in Europe successfully for more than 50 years, is now widely used in the United States as well. Sclerotherapy involves the injection of a "sclerosing agent," most typically a salt solution, directly into the affected varicose or spider vein. Over time, this causes the spider vein to clot, shrink, and dissolve, which minimizes or eliminates the unsightly discoloring. There is no health risk involved by removing these small surface veins.
There can be slight discomfort from the injections and the procedure can result in some minor bruising that can persist for up to six to eight weeks. The unwanted veins will diminish in color and size over several weeks. In most cases, a series of treatments will be required for the desired result. Treatments can take 15-30 minutes with minimal recovery time.
